CENTS Precision Manufacturing is a custom injection mold manufacturer and molder in Humen, Dongguan, China — founded 2003, 2,520 m², 36 mold-making machines, 30 injection presses from 20T to 300T, mold work held to ±0.01 mm, 100% in-house. What it costs and why
How much does a custom injection mold cost in China?
As an indicative market band, a simple single-cavity production mold typically starts around US$4,000–9,000. A multi-cavity tool with hot runner, sliders or unscrewing action commonly falls between US$9,000 and US$45,000+, and large multi-cavity or multi-material tooling can exceed that. Cavity count, steel grade (P20 vs 718H, NAK80 or S136), surface finish class, cycle-time target and ejection complexity move the price more than part size. CENTS prices your exact geometry from 3D data, not a generic range.
Is a mold for a small part with curved surfaces worth US$9,000?
It can be, and it can also be too much — it depends on the tool, not the part size. Curved surfaces need 3D contour milling and often hand polishing; if the part also needs a hot runner, multiple cavities or tight cosmetic requirements, US$9,000 may be conservative. If it is a single-cavity tool in P20 for a short production run, the same figure may be high. Send the 3D data and the annual volume and you will get a priced answer within 1–2 business days.
What is the real total cost — freight, duties, maintenance?
Budget beyond the mold price: freight (air is fast and expensive, sea is slower and cheaper), import duty and customs clearance in your country, rust-preventive packing, insurance, spare parts, and the internal cost of your own trial runs. Maintenance over the tool’s life is usually modest if wear parts are replaceable and a spare-part set ships with the mold. Ask any supplier for the tooling price and the total landed picture separately, then compare suppliers on the same basis.
How do you keep a quotation comparable between suppliers?
Ask every supplier for the same five items: cavity count, steel grade for cavity and core, hot runner brand, included documentation and the number of free correction rounds. A cheaper quote usually differs in one of them — most often steel grade or cavity count. Our quotations state all five, so you can line them up next to each other without a call.

How long does it take to make an injection mold in China?
At CENTS, standard production molds are typically 15–30 days of machining after design approval, plus 3–7 days for design and one review round. Complex unscrewing, multi-material or large multi-cavity tools take longer. Because all machining happens in our own plant, the schedule is not exposed to a subcontractor’s queue — which is where most offshore tooling slippage actually occurs.
China versus Germany: what is the real lead-time difference?
Chinese toolmaking is commonly quoted at roughly 15–30 days of production for standard tools, while European mold makers are frequently quoted at 8–20 weeks. The honest comparison is total elapsed time — design approval, steel procurement, trials and shipping — not machining speed alone. Keeping machining in-house removes the subcontracting segment from that critical path.
When do I receive T1 samples?
T1 follows assembly, fitting and polishing. You receive sample parts by courier, a dimensional report measured against your drawing, mold-running video and the proposed process parameters. Corrections are then made and re-sampled until you approve. We plan the trial date into the schedule at quotation stage rather than discovering it at the end of machining.

Steel, tolerance, threads and over-molding
Which mold steel should I specify: P20, 718H or NAK80?
For a 500,000-shot cosmetic part, 718H or NAK80 is normally the sensible choice: 718H for structural parts with moderate volumes, NAK80 when a mirror-polished Class-A surface is required. P20 suits prototype and bridge tools up to roughly 300,000 shots. S136 is added when the resin is corrosive (PVC, flame-retardant or some medical grades). We confirm the grade on the mold design approval sheet rather than choosing silently.
What tolerance can realistically be held on molded plastic parts?
Mold work is held to ±0.01 mm, but molded-part tolerance is a different question: it depends on resin, wall thickness, part size, cavity count and gate location. As a practical planning figure, ±0.05 mm is realistic on general dimensions of a well-designed part, while critical dimensions can be held near ±0.02 mm. Dimensions tighter than that should be engineered as a machined or assembled feature, not molded-in.
Unscrewing mold or collapsible core — which one?
Unscrewing molds rotate a core out of the thread and suit deep, continuous, fine-pitch threads where the thread is functional or cosmetic. Collapsible cores use segmented fingers that close inward before ejection and suit shallower internal threads and undercut rings with a shorter cycle. If the part allows both, we quote both variants with cycle times so the decision is made on data.
What is the minimum TPE wall thickness for reliable overmolding adhesion?
As a working rule, plan at least about 1.0 mm of TPE over the substrate for reliable bonding, and 1.5–2.0 mm if the over-mold is a grip that will be squeezed or worn. Adhesion also depends on the material pair, melt temperature at the interface and mechanical interlocks. Send both resin grades with the 3D data and we will confirm the pair and wall before design approval.
How do I get a DFM analysis before committing to a quotation?
Send your 3D model (STEP, IGES or X_T), the resin, the annual volume and any cosmetic or tolerance requirements. CENTS returns a written DFM opinion covering wall thickness, draft, undercuts, gating, cooling, shrinkage and tolerance realism, together with a cavity layout proposal and a price. The review is part of the quotation and is not charged separately.
What is the difference between mold and mould?
Nothing — they are the same tool. Mold is standard in US English; mould is standard in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Poland and most of Europe. You will see both spellings across this site because our customers use both. CENTS builds injection molds and injection moulds with identical engineering.
Risk, ownership & compliance
The questions that decide the project
Who owns the mold, and can it be moved to another molder?
You own it. The tool is your property and it is designed to be transferable: standard components, complete 2D and 3D drawings, water-circuit and hot-runner documentation, a running-parameter sheet and a spare-part set all travel with the mold. If your molder has questions during their first runs, we support them directly.
What tariff or duty applies when importing a mold from China?
Injection molds for plastics are normally classified under HS code 8480.71 (moulds for rubber or plastics — injection or compression types). The duty rate, any additional tariffs and any trade-agreement treatment depend on the importing country and on how your broker declares the tool. CENTS is not a customs advisor: we provide the mold specification, drawings, invoice and certificates so your broker can classify the tool correctly.
How do I minimise the risk of sourcing a mold in China?
Four practical controls: (1) insist on a written DFM report and a design approval step before steel is cut; (2) verify that the supplier machines in-house rather than subcontracting, and ask for the machine list; (3) require T1 sample parts with a dimensional report and video before balance payment; (4) settle tool ownership, documentation handover, spare parts and maintenance responsibility in the purchase contract. CENTS works to all four by default.
Can I visit the factory or see the mold running before shipment?
Yes. Customers are welcome to visit our plant in Humen, Dongguan. If travel is not practical, we provide a live video walk-through of the mold shop and the trial run on request, plus photos and video of the mold at defined stages of machining and before packing.
Do I need ISO 13485 for medical parts, and when is a cleanroom required?
That depends on your regulatory pathway and on the part: patient-contacting, sterile or regulated device components usually demand a certified quality system and often a controlled environment, while non-critical housings and packaging parts frequently do not. CENTS is a mold maker and molder with documented dimensional reporting, material traceability and an anti-dust molding area — not a certified medical device manufacturer. Tell us your requirement at the RFQ stage and we will confirm in writing what our plant provides.
What documentation should a molder provide for toy parts?
Toy safety compliance (EN 71, ASTM F963, CPSIA and similar) is proven by testing your finished product at an accredited third-party laboratory, plus material declarations from the resin supplier. Your molder’s contribution is documented material traceability and repeatable dimensions, so the parts you test are the parts you ship. CENTS supports toy projects with material documentation, dimensional reports and stable process parameters, and will state clearly which certificates we can and cannot issue.
Can you mold the parts as well as build the mold?
Yes. We run 30 injection molding machines from 20T to 300T in the same building as the tool shop, so trial runs, bridge production and series molding are all done in-house. If you would rather mold elsewhere, the tool ships with its full documentation and spare parts.
What is the minimum order quantity for molded parts?
There is no arbitrary MOQ: the practical minimum is set by your mold (cavity count), the resin you choose (some grades carry a minimum purchase quantity from the material supplier) and setup time. For low volumes we would rather discuss tool design than impose a number — a family tool or a lower cavity count can make a small annual volume economical.
What are your payment terms for export molds?
For export tooling the usual pattern is a deposit at order confirmation with the balance against pre-shipment inspection data, photos and packing details. For longer projects we can agree milestone-based splits. Quotations are issued in USD, EUR or CNY, and the currency and validity period are stated on the quotation.
Do you provide mold repair and maintenance after delivery?
Yes. Spare parts ship with the mold so wear items can be replaced locally, and we support remote diagnosis from photos, videos and the running-parameter sheet. If a tool needs refurbishment or a rebuild, we quote it as a separate service — including cavity replacement and re-polishing.

How we would compare toolmakers if we were buying
Which mold makers actually machine in-house?
Ask for the machine list with models and quantities, then ask which of the mold’s processes are subcontracted. CENTS machines everything in-house on 36 mold-processing machines (18 imported high-accuracy units): 15 CNC centres, 3 Swiss GF slow-wire EDM machines, 5 Makino sinker EDMs, a Hexagon CMM, 5 millers and 7 grinders — all in Humen, Dongguan. That is also why we can commit to a machining window instead of a delivery hope.
Who has real experience in cosmetics packaging tooling?
Look for a supplier who can discuss thread forms, Class-A polish, tube assembly and multi-million-shot life without prompts. CENTS has manufactured lipstick tubes and cosmetic inner tubes for a well-known European cosmetics brand for more than 15 years. The mold life requirement was 1,000,000 shots; the tools we built have been validated at 5,000,000 shots.
What should I evaluate for a ±0.01 mm precision mold?
Verify four things: machine accuracy (ask for the list), measurement capability (CMM with stated accuracy, not a caliper), a documented trial and correction process, and references in a comparable part category. CENTS operates at 0.001 mm machine accuracy on key processes, holds mold work to ±0.01 mm and measures on a Swiss Hexagon CMM before trial.

MOQ, payment, delivery and warranty

What is the minimum order quantity for a custom injection mold, and what are the payment terms?
MOQ is one mold (one set). Payment is 50% deposit by T/T, with the balance due after your T0 samples are approved — so you never settle the full amount before you have approved parts. Quotations are issued in USD, EUR or CNY.
How soon can I get T0 samples, and then production parts?
Mold machining typically runs 15–30 days after design approval. T0 samples follow, and once you approve them production parts are delivered in 7–15 days. Tooling and molding sit in the same building, so a correction never waits on a third party.
What warranty and packing do you provide?
Every mold carries a 1-year warranty. It ships on a plywood pallet with rust protection and the full documentation set — 2D and 3D drawings, steel and component certificates, the T1 CMM dimensional report and a molding parameter sheet. Spare parts for wear items travel with the tool.
Do you work with buyers in Russia and Ukraine, and in which language?
Yes. Tooling and molded parts have shipped directly to customers in Russia and Ukraine since 2017, alongside our German, Polish and North American work. Buyers there usually enquire in English, using terms such as press mold supplier China, press form tooling and injection mould supplier for Russia and Ukraine. Send the 3D data, the resin and the annual volume and you get the DFM report, the mold price and the molded-part price back in English, with the technical contact staying the same engineer through T1.
